I have never experienced anything like the biting flies or aggressive mosquitoes as I overheard an FWC officer describing them. I’ve lived in Florida practically my entire life and I’ve been bit by just about everything that lives on blood. Swarms of the typical, slow moving easy to smack mosquitoes that deet keeps away, no problem but these lightning quick little flying triangles are something else. These little fuckers even bite through my long sleeve t-shirts and did I mention how fast they are? They even bit me IN my ears. They bite my hands and fingers while I’m playing guitar, bite all around the brim of my hat, all around my glasses, they seem to really like spots where the skin is thin and there’s a high concentration of capillaries. I’m old enough now that I’m not worried about the long term exposure to chemicals but it doesn’t make it any easier to tolerate the nasty shit to keep the bugs away.
Some friends of mine are immune or just not on the menu of those aggressive mosquitoes. I’m going to have to start taking garlic tablets as I don’t eat enough in my diet, I’ve always heard that garlic deters them like vampires. I’m not sure but I did give up alcohol so maybe that’s why I feel the bites or maybe they don’t like drunks and most of my friends drink leaving me the sole target of the biting bastards. Could be worse, I could be playing at a nudist resort.
