Sobriety really is overrated, all hobbies cost money but recreational drinking is fun and easy. I always liked stopping by the Carib after a gig and having quite a few. The late nights seem to be over for now as the covid put life on a different schedule and I ran out of drink tickets in this life which is okay, I still have foggy memories and watch as my friends with a moderation approach enjoy a few adult beverages. Unfortunately for me I’ve always had a pedal to the metal, full speed ahead approach to life which keeps life interesting but it’s hard on the body. I think for me it’s the boredom at night when the rest of the world is sleeping and I guess I could’ve done something else but nothing seemed to be as satisfying as hanging out and drinking with late night friends. I’ve always been one of those people who are up between midnight and dawn when all the infomercials and paid advertising hog up the tv. God forbid you wake up a night sleeper, they lose their minds if you disturb them but the world seems to hate day sleepers. It’s almost as if they’re jealous, they don’t perceive what you do as a legitimate way of life especially if you are a musician.
Day drinking can be really fun however. It’s fun to catch a buzz while everyone else is working, it’s that special feeling of freedom, escaping the usual routine, breaking the monotony of the day to day existence. I watch people on vacation as they try to get their alcohol legs. Local drunks are good at getting around and not appearing as drunk as they actually are, tourist are wobbly and usually have assistance or a babysitter. Oh well, it’s something to do.
